Ellen Refreshes Her House: Before
A new coat of paint on your house isn’t just to improve curb appeal – although it certainly helps! House painting is actually an essential home maintenance project because exterior paint and caulking helps protect your home from weather damage, rotting wood, and insect issues.
A quality paint upgrade also helps reduce allergens and moisture that enter the home. Not only will you breathe easier, but you can sleep better at night knowing your home is structurally sound and protected from sun-fade and mildew.
Generally the best time to paint your home’s exterior is in early summer or early fall. These times of year often offer ideal weather conditions so that paint can be applied smoothly and dry properly.
A Note on Soffit
Another benefit of repainting your home’s exterior is that it gives you a chance to examine your home’s exterior walls for stability. Also, take advantage of the chance to inspect your soffit as well! Soffit, also called house eaves or roof rafters, refers to the finished appearance of the underside of your roof’s overhang.
Soffit protects your siding from sun and harsh weather as well as keeping rainwater away from the foundation. Additionally, soffit helps ventilate your roof and attic, keeping away unwanted moisture and aiding to cool the roof.
It’s a good idea to pay attention to the your home’s soffit every now and then, even when it’s in good shape. Bees, wasps and other small creatures often like to build homes in the shade of a roof!
When Ellen began repainting her 100+ year old home, it became apparent some of the old soffit had rotted and was no longer functional. And, if Ellen had not kept up on her home’s exterior paint, it may been longer in noticing the home’s soffit damage.
Ellen is currently tackling this project because she knows just how important a new coat of exterior paint is. Check out the following “Before” pictures, and remember to stay tuned for the finished result on Ellen’s new house paint! Also, check the soffit in the “Before” photos – you can see where the damage is!
