Buying a new home is exciting! Moving into it, though, can be stressful and overwhelming. Once those keys are in hand, you just want to settle in and start enjoying your new space, but you have to make it through move-in day. Follow Ellen’s EZ tips for a smooth, stress-free first day in your brand new home!
Utilities & Services
There are several things you will have to complete before move-in day actually arrives, besides boxing up all your belongings. For a seamless move-in, make sure all utilities are set up or transferred into your name. Schedule these services to start on closing day to prevent any gaps in service and keep the household running smoothly from day one.
Key utilities to consider:
- Electric
- Gas
- Water/Sewer
- Trash
- Internet
Tip: Ask the seller for the average monthly costs to help you budget accurately and avoid surprises in the first few months in the home!
Update Your Address
As moving day approaches, create a list of all the places your address will need to be updated. Some updates can be taken care of before move-in day, while others should be handled once you are officially in the home. Start with the essentials, like mail-forwarding through the U.S. Postal Service and your driver’s license or state ID.
Other places to update your address:
- Voter registration
- Bank accounts and credit cards
- Investment accounts
- Employer payroll
- Insurance policies
- Subscription services
Having this list handy will help prevent milled bills, lost mail, or administrative headaches during your first few weeks in the home.
Packing & Moving Tips
The first step is to declutter. Donate, sell, or recycle any items you no longer need. Label every single box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs to. If you plan to have movers or several helpers assist you on moving day, take it a step further by color-coding boxes with large stickers to coordinate the room they belong in. This makes it much easier for those moving the boxes to know exactly where they should go!
Ellen’s top moving day tip is to pack a “last out, first in” box. This is your essentials box. Pack it with key things you will need for your first day in the home – phone chargers, clean blankets and sheets, cleaning supplies, etc.
When it comes to moving, Ellen, of course, has a go-to crew she recommends to everyone – Mike Hammer Moving!
One of Mike Hammer’s number one tips for homeowners planning to work with movers on moving day is to have everything packed up and ready to go when they arrive. “Moves are much easier when people are ready for them!”
